The 21 inch diameter Mark 16 was a submarine-launched, anti-surface ship torpedo. It entered service before the end of WWII but did not see combat usage. A ready-to-fire torpedo with warhead and chemical for the turbine weighed 4000 pounds. Over 1700 Mk 16 torpedoes were produced. Over its long service usage the Mark 16 torpedo was upgraded several times with the last version being the Mod 8 which was in service up until 1975.
