The U.S. M1 75mm pack howitzer was designed in the 1920s to meet a need for an artillery piece that could be moved across difficult terrain. The gun and carriage was designed so that it could be broken down into several pieces to be carried by pack animals. It saw combat in WWII. After WWII it was renamed the M116. Gun variations were the M1 and M1A1. Carriage variations include M1 and M8 which were of a box trail design as well as M3A1, M3A2, and M3A3 which were of a split trail design.
