The original M1897 75mm field gun in service with the USA was purchased from France in 1917. This M1897 'French 75' gun was mounted on a M1897 carriage which had wooden wheels and a steel "pole-trail". Subsequent variants were of American manufacture. These variants introduced between WWI and WWII included modifications to the recoil system and a split-trail carriage with pneumatic tires. By WWII the towed M1897 75mm field gun was limited to use as a training weapon.
