This is a Ford built M4A3 with serial number 2797. This dates the tank as being built in October, 1942. The original USA Registration Number of 3055757 is still painted on the tank.

Comment from Joe Demarco "As best I can tell from Archives documents, General Steel
was the sole supplier of turrets to Ford and Montreal Locomotive. There are more surviving
examples of GS turrets than anything else. You can tell by the date you found on that turret (7-15-43) that it would not be original to a Sherman built in 10/42. The majority of surviving Shermans do not have their original turrets, due to remfg. programs, scavenging and so forth. The part number of the turret is D50878 and the serial number is 4672E. It was made about a month after the introduction of turrets with no pistol ports &
thickened right cheeks. I think this is the kind of GS turret used on all the Canadian built Grizzlies, & by Ford on its last 400 or so M4A3s."
